About this sacred site

Hemis is the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh, belonging to the Drukpa Kagyu lineage. Founded in the 17th century under royal patronage, it houses an exceptional collection of thangkas, statues, and stupas including a famous 3-storey thangka of Guru Padmasambhava that is only displayed every 12 years. The annual Hemis Festival (Tsechu) held in June or July is one of the most spectacular Buddhist festivals in the Himalayas, featuring masked cham dances representing the victory of good over evil. The monastery sits in a dramatic gorge of the Indus Valley and is surrounded by the arid, majestic landscape of Ladakh.
