Boudhanath is one of the largest spherical stupas in the world and the beating heart of Tibetan Buddhism in exile. The great white dome topped with the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha dominates the skyline of eastern Kathmandu. The surrounding Tibetan quarter is dense with monasteries β Kagyu, Nyingma, Sakya, and Gelug β making it perhaps the most concentrated centre of living Tibetan Buddhist practice outside of Tibet. Circumambulating the stupa (kora) alongside thousands of other pilgrims, monks, and nuns spinning prayer wheels at dawn or dusk is one of the most profound Buddhist pilgrimage experiences available. The stupa is particularly associated with the Nyingma tradition; Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche’s Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling monastery is nearby.
