About this sacred site

Lhasa — “Place of the Gods” — is the spiritual capital of Tibet and the centre of Tibetan Buddhist civilisation. The Jokhang Temple, built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo, is the most sacred temple in Tibet and houses the Jowo Shakyamuni — a statue of the Buddha at age 12 considered the most precious in the Tibetan world. The Barkhor, the ancient pilgrimage circuit around the Jokhang, is perpetually alive with pilgrims performing prostrations, monks chanting, and incense smoke rising. The Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and perhaps the most iconic structure in the Himalayan world, towers above the city from the Red Hill. Despite decades of occupation and cultural destruction, Lhasa remains the heart of Tibetan identity and aspiration.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a Tibet Travel Permit?
You cannot arrange it yourself. You must book through a licensed Tibet travel agency in China or Nepal. The agency applies for the permit on your behalf. Allow 2 to 4 weeks. Individual travel is completely forbidden.
How do I book Potala Palace tickets?
Potala Palace has a daily visitor limit. Tickets must be booked in advance through the official platform or your tour agency. Walk-ins are usually not possible in high season.
Is altitude sickness a concern in Lhasa?
Yes — Lhasa sits at 3,650m. Most visitors experience some symptoms in the first 1 to 3 days. Rest, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and do not fly in and immediately exert yourself.
What is the Barkhor and how do I join the kora?
The Barkhor is the ancient pilgrimage circuit surrounding the Jokhang Temple. Simply join the flow of pilgrims walking clockwise around the temple — always clockwise.
