About this sacred site

Taktsang Palphug Monastery — the “Tiger’s Nest” — is the most iconic image of Bhutan and one of the most dramatic sacred sites in the entire Buddhist world. The monastery clings to a sheer granite cliff face 900 metres above the Paro Valley, at an altitude of 3,120 metres. It was built around a cave where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have meditated for three months in the 8th century, flying there from Tibet on the back of a tiger (a transformed form of his consort Yeshe Tsogyal). The site contains multiple temples and meditation caves, with the most sacred being Guru Rinpoche’s meditation cave at the deepest level. The strenuous hike to reach it is itself an act of pilgrimage. Bhutan’s entire national identity is built around the Vajrayana Buddhism that Guru Padmasambhava brought.
