About this sacred site

Bodh Gaya is the most sacred site in Buddhism — the place where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree. The Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, marks the exact spot of the Buddha’s awakening and draws pilgrims from every Buddhist tradition worldwide. The Vajrasana (Diamond Throne) beneath the Bodhi Tree is considered the spiritual centre of the universe in Buddhist cosmology. The site hosts major annual events including the Kagyu Monlam, Kalachakra initiations, and Nyingma Monlam, making it a convergence point for all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The surrounding area has monasteries from every Buddhist country — Tibetan, Japanese, Thai, Burmese, and more — making it a remarkable living cross-section of world Buddhism.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to attend teachings?
October to February is peak season. The Kagyu Monlam runs in December, and the Kalachakra initiation is held periodically — check the Dalai Lama's official schedule at dalailama.com.
Is accommodation expensive during major events?
Yes — book 3 to 6 months in advance for Monlam and Kalachakra periods. Prices rise sharply. Many monasteries offer simple guestrooms at very low cost.
Can I do a meditation retreat here?
Several monasteries offer short retreat programmes. The Root Institute for Wisdom Culture runs courses throughout the season. The Tergar Monastery also hosts practice sessions.
Is Bodh Gaya safe for solo female travellers?
Generally yes within the temple complex and surrounding Buddhist area. Take standard precautions at night. The Tibetan enclave around the Bhutanese monastery is particularly safe.
