About this sacred site

Boudhanath is one of the largest spherical stupas in the world and the beating heart of Tibetan Buddhism in exile. The great white dome topped with the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha dominates the skyline of eastern Kathmandu. The surrounding Tibetan quarter is dense with monasteries — Kagyu, Nyingma, Sakya, and Gelug — making it perhaps the most concentrated centre of living Tibetan Buddhist practice outside of Tibet. Circumambulating the stupa (kora) alongside thousands of other pilgrims, monks, and nuns spinning prayer wheels at dawn or dusk is one of the most profound Buddhist pilgrimage experiences available. The stupa is particularly associated with the Nyingma tradition; Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche’s Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling monastery is nearby.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to do the kora?
Dawn is the most extraordinary time — monks, pilgrims, and locals circumambulate together with the sound of mantras and butter lamps still burning from the night. Dusk is equally beautiful.
How many circumambulations should I do?
Traditionally 3, 7, 21, or 108 — but there is no rule. Walk clockwise at a pace that feels natural. The kora is about 500 metres.
Are there teachings I can attend near Boudhanath?
Yes — Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling (Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche), Shechen Monastery (Nyingma), and Kopan Monastery all hold regular teachings and courses for foreigners.
Do I need to pay to enter Boudhanath?
NPR 400 entry fee for the stupa area (foreigners). Free for Nepali nationals. The fee covers maintenance of the site.
